Generators are built to last, and major overhauls may only be needed every few decades. Between overhauls, the need for major maintenance is usually low, but smaller maintenance tasks and repairs can be carried out as needed.
Generator maintenance and repair requirements vary depending on the condition of the machine and the situation. We provide generator maintenance and repairs as well as work related to major overhauls, such as rotor pole winding re-insulations.
Flowplus generator services include:
• generator repairs
• generator maintenance
• work related to generator overhauls
During a hydroelectric generator overhaul, the different components of the generator are inspected and refurbished or replaced as required.
As part of the overhaul, the generator frame and stator, including the stator winding, can be completely rebuilt. The rotating part of the generator, the rotor, can often be overhauled while retaining its existing structure. One of the demanding stages involved in rotor overhaul is the re-insulation of the rotor pole windings.
The generator rotor pole windings can be re-insulated as part of an overhaul. The work is a multi-stage process that begins with the inspection and disassembly of the components and proceeds through re-insulation to final inspections and testing.
Re-insulation Process
1. Incoming inspection
2. Disassembly and cleaning (hazardous material assessment and waste handling)
3. NDT inspection
4. Rotor pole winding re-insulation and heat pressing
5. Finishing
6. Final inspections and testing
Generator overhaul requires expertise in generator construction as well as the different stages of the overhaul process. Flowplus has experience in numerous generator overhauls and maintenance projects.
Our generator services are available throughout the year, covering both planned overhauls and unexpected repairs.
With proper maintenance, a generator can have a very long service life. Regular maintenance helps maintain generator reliability and extend the time between major overhauls. In addition to scheduled maintenance, maintenance needs can be assessed based on measurements and inspections, and any required work can be carried out based on the condition of the machine. Any faults can be repaired as they occur.
The scope of an overhaul depends on the generator’s construction and condition. During a hydroelectric generator overhaul, various generator components can be refurbished or replaced as needed. The overhaul may include, for example, replacement of the stator and stator winding as well as re-insulation of the rotor pole windings.
Rotor pole winding re-insulation involves replacing the insulation of the rotor pole windings as part of a generator overhaul. The work includes inspections and testing, re-insulation of the pole windings, and finishing.
